Labs
Lab work only becomes useful when it lives somewhere you can trend it. The Labs tab on every client record turns lab reports — whatever lab they came from — into structured biomarker history: upload a PDF and AI extracts the values, or type one in by hand, or (where enabled) order the draw itself without leaving the page. Every value is judged against a reference range, charted over time, and mirrored into the client's own app so they see the same story you do.
This page covers getting results in, how "in range" is decided (and how to set your clinic's own standards), reading trends, and what clients see on their side.
Open a client's record and choose the Labs tab. The Add Labs button at the top right is the entry point for everything: Manual Add (type values in), Import (upload a report for AI extraction), and — when the integrations are connected — Order Labs (Junction) and Order Labs (Fullscript).
Upload a lab PDF — AI extraction
Importing a report is the fastest way to load a full panel. You drop in the PDF (or a photo of a printed report), the AI reads it, and you review an editable table of everything it found before anything is saved — nothing enters the record without your approval.
-
Click Add Labs → Import. In the Upload Document window, keep Document Type on Lab Report, pick the Quality that matches your file — Digital (a born-digital PDF), Printed (a good photo or scan), or Scan (low quality or fax) — and drop the file in. PDF, JPG, and PNG up to 25MB are accepted. Telling the AI the scan quality helps it read rough photos and faxes correctly.
-
Click Analyze. The file uploads, then the AI extracts every analyte (an analyte is a single measured marker, like glucose or TSH) with its value, unit, and the report's collection date. Different labs name the same test differently — "Thyroid Stim. Hormone" vs "TSH" — so each extracted name is matched to the platform's standard biomarker registry automatically.
-
Review before saving. The Review extracted values screen shows the original PDF beside an editable table — Lab biomarker, Value, Unit — with each recognized value pre-checked. Confirm the Report date (required, pre-filled when the AI found it on the report), fix any value or unit inline, and click a biomarker's name to remap it if the match is wrong. Anything the AI couldn't recognize is highlighted in amber and left unchecked, so unknowns never slip in silently. You approve exactly what gets imported; amber rows are unmatched names waiting for you to remap or skip.
-
Click Approve. The checked values are imported into the client's lab history — you'll see a confirmation with the count — and each result keeps a link back to the source PDF, so you can always View source document from any reading later.
If a report uses a different unit than the platform's standard for that marker, the value is converted automatically and the original is kept visible in the review table (a small "was …" caption). That's what makes results from different labs chartable on one graph.
Enter a value manually
For a single value — a point-of-care glucose, a result the client read to you over the phone — manual entry is quicker than a document.
-
Click Add Labs → Manual Add. In the Add Lab Value window, search the Lab Test field (it covers 170+ tests) and pick the marker — the Unit fills in automatically.
-
Enter the Value, adjust the Collection Date if it wasn't today, and click Add Lab Value. The result lands in the history immediately, judged and charted exactly like an imported one.
When you're already looking at a marker's history, the Add Value button on that screen opens the same window pre-filled with the marker and unit — two fewer clicks.
Order labs (where enabled)
If your organization has a lab-ordering integration connected (under Settings → Integrations), the Add Labs menu grows ordering options — so the same tab that stores results can start the draw:
- Order Labs (Junction) opens the Order Lab Tests window for standard bloodwork through partner networks like Quest Diagnostics, Labcorp, and BioReference — no prescriber needed. You build a cart from your saved packages or individual tests, choose a Collection method — Test Kit (mailed to the client), Walk-in (client visits a nearby lab), or At-home phlebotomy (a phlebotomist comes to them) — pick who pays under Billing (Charge clinic or Charge client on their card on file), and click Place Order.
- Order Labs (Fullscript) opens your embedded Fullscript catalog for functional labs.
Once placed, orders appear in the tab's Lab Orders section with a live status — Ordered → In transit → At lab → Results in — and when results arrive, the biomarkers flow straight into the client's lab history without another import.
Ordering options are filtered by the client's service address — collection methods and lab networks only show where they actually operate, and a few jurisdictions have restrictions the window explains as you go. The client must be 18+ and have a date of birth on file.
Reference ranges and clinic benchmarks
Every result gets a status — Optimal, In Range, Out of Range, or Critical — and where the line sits is layered, most specific first:
- Your clinic's benchmark, if you've set one for that marker. A benchmark is your clinic's own range definition — say, a tighter "optimal" band for fasting glucose than the standard reference — and it can carry age and gender variants so a 55-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman are judged against the right numbers.
- The standard registry range otherwise — the platform's built-in, curated reference range for that marker.
To set a benchmark, open any marker's detail view and find the Benchmark card — it shows a Default badge when the registry range applies, or Custom when yours does. Click + Customize (or Edit), choose the Range Type (whether the scale has an optimal band, upper limit only, and so on), add Variants by age and gender if you need them, fill in the bounds, and Save Benchmark.
Even though you edit it from one client's chart, a saved benchmark changes how that marker is judged for every client in your organization — it's a clinic standard, not a per-client target. Deleting it returns the marker to the registry default.
The platform prefers its registry ranges over whatever range was printed on the incoming report, because lab-supplied ranges are inconsistent from vendor to vendor. Your clinic benchmark, when set, outranks both.
View trends
The tab's summary header counts the client's markers by status — Total, Optimal, In Range, Out of Range — and each tile filters the list, so "show me everything out of range" is one click. Each row carries a sparkline of recent values.
Click any marker to open its detail view: a Latest Result card with the current status, a History chart of the last results drawn over the range bands (green for optimal, red tint for out of range), and an All Results table listing every reading with its date, reference range, and a link to the source document where one exists. Pin the markers you check most — pinned markers sort to the top of the list.
The History chart makes a drifting marker obvious long before it crosses a line.
Every marker detail view has an ask-Atlas shortcut that hands Atlas the value history, range, and trend as context. Try:
- "Summarize this client's lab trends over the past year."
- "Which of this client's markers are out of range right now?"
- "Explain this ferritin trend in plain language I can send the client."
What the client sees
Clients see their own labs in their mobile app and in the client web portal's Health Data page — the same values, statuses, and trend charts you see, in friendlier language (out-of-range results are shown as Flagged). They can tap into any marker for its history chart and full result list. The client side is read-only: clients can't add, edit, or delete lab values from the portal.
You decide how much they see. Under Settings → Client Apps → Visible Labs, you can limit the client-facing list to specific markers — useful if you'd rather discuss certain results in a visit before they appear in the app. Leave it unset and clients see all their labs.
Next steps
- Order through your own catalog → build lab packages your team can order in one click; see Marketplace & Shop.
- Control the client-facing view → choose which markers clients see under Settings → Client Apps; pair labs with wearable metrics for the full picture.
- Message results to clients securely → discuss a flagged result in Chat & Messaging instead of email, with Atlas drafting the plain-language explanation.
